A special program for musicians who wish to deepen their knowledge and skills in Arabic music

This year at the Bahar Bayram Middle Eastern Dance and Music Camp, we are planning to include a very special series of masterclasses for musicians. These classes will be conducted alongside the camp program of workshops, and will give musicians the opportunity to undertake indepth study with two masters of Arabic music, Adel Salameh and Faisal Zedan.

This is a rare opportunity to study with these internationally acclaimed musicians. Both Adel and Faisal will be teaching exclusively at the camp while they are in Australia. It is the first time Adel Salameh has taught classes in Australia. Faisal Zedan has been sharing his knowledge at the camp for a few years already, but this year his teaching will delve deeper into gaining mastery of Arabic percussion.

Students attending the masterclasses will also have access to all other workshops at the camp; including maqamat (scales or modes), Arabic bowed strings, ney (flute), clarinet, Turkish ensemble, Persian ensemble, Persian percussion, frame drums, Turkish darbuka, and other workshops yet to be determined.

There are 4 workshop timeslots each day and a choice of 5 music workshops on offer at any one time. We anticipate that depending on which stream people are enrolled in, they will attend 2-3 masterclass sessions per day, plus 1-2 workshops in the main camp program.

How are the masterclasses different from the rest of the camp program?

Masterclasses are not aimed at beginners and a dedication to the practice of your instrument is required. However, for the oud, attendance for beginners will be possible, with Mike Taylor assisting Adel by teaching beginners separately, under Adel’s guidance. Masterclasses will require enrolment prior to the camp, to ensure there is continuity in the classes and a standard of musicianship compatible with the material being taught. Participants will be expected to attend all masterclasses they have booked into.

Masterclasses on offer are:

• Arabic Oud – Adel Salameh

• Arabic Music & Ensemble (all instruments – prior experience with Arabic music is not required, however musicians must be skilled on their instrument) – Adel Salameh

• Darbuka – Faisal Zedan

• Riq – Faisal Zedan

• Arabic Percussion Ensemble – Faisal Zedan

Masterclass participants will pay the same camp fees as other camp attendees. Fees are inclusive of 5 nights’ accommodation (shared), all (delicious) meals, plus afternoon and morning teas, all tuition and the evening program of concerts. 2018 camp fees are $870.00 (Early-bird – paid in full before 30 August)/ $900.00 if paid after 30 August. A deposit of $180.00 can be paid to secure your place and fees can be paid off over a period of time.

Bookings can be made by going to the FULL CAMP BOOKINGS PAGE and payments can be made on the PRICES & PAYMENTS PAGE.
